Philadelphia Business Journal: Elliptical machines generate power at Drexel’s new recreation center

Drexel University recently unveiled their new fitness facility. While the new facility looks incredibly modern, it also features the ability to convert kinetic energy into electricity that will be harnessed to power a sign that has “Drexel Dragons” written on it. 


The carbon-free power will be produced when any of the dozen elliptical machines are being used. A standard 30-minute workout on an elliptical can produce up to 50 watts of energy. For more on the new center and it's unusual energy source, click the link below.

  1. This is a GREAT idea! It makes me wonder what is possible if all elipticals had something to attach and create usable power.
